The National Virus Forum: 6th Annual Meeting

Addressing Industry Challenges Head-On

The National Virus Forum (NVF) was established in response to the growing challenges faced by the potato industry.  Back in 2018, increasing aphid activity and rising virus levels in seed crops signalled trouble ahead.  By 2019, these concerns became a reality, with significant virus-related problems affecting ware crops across England.  Recognising the urgent need for industry-wide collaboration, the NVF was formed in January 2020 to tackle these issues and restore confidence in the system.

The Forum’s Vital Role

Since its inception, the NVF has met annually, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss and address pressing virus concerns.  Now organised and chaired by GB Potatoes, the forum continues to be a cornerstone for industry dialogue and action.  The upcoming 6th annual meeting, scheduled for February 20th, comes at a critical time as the seed industry deals with the challenge of Potato Leaf Roll Virus.

The recent Scottish Virus Meeting, held in December and co-organised by GB Potatoes and SAC, raised crucial questions that need to be addressed.  Building on the outcomes of that meeting, the NVF aims to develop a strategy that will help maintain GB’s reputation for producing the highest-quality seed potatoes in the world.

A Collaborative Approach

This year’s meeting will bring together over 50 key industry stakeholders, including government agencies, agronomists, technical managers, and growers. The discussions will focus on several key areas, such as:

  • Enhancing transparency and communication within supply chains.
  • Reviewing and considering appropriate changes to certification.
  • Increasing scrutiny and management of potato varieties, particularly in shorter-generation reproduction.
  • Sharing knowledge across Great Britain and internationally.
  • Encouraging the adoption of best practices throughout the industry.

Supporting Growers with Practical Resources

One of the NVF’s key objectives is to disseminate vital information across the industry and encourage engagement from both seed and ware growers.  After all, healthy seed equals healthy ware crops.  To support growers in this mission, two essential guides are available:

  • The Six-Step Guide for Seed Growers
  • The Four-Step Guide for Ware Growers

Both guides can be accessed on the GB Potatoes website: GB Potatoes Resources

Looking Ahead

As the industry continues to face virus challenges, the NVF remains committed to fostering collaboration and driving positive change.  The insights and strategies developed during this year’s meeting will be instrumental in shaping the future of seed potato production in Great Britain.  Stay tuned for updates following the event as we work together to safeguard the industry’s future.
