Tools to Manage Virus in Seed and Ware Potato Crops
The management of virus in potato crops is becoming increasingly critical as the spread of Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) continues to rise. Understanding how viruses spread and implementing effective control measures is essential for both seed and ware potato growers. Fortunately, growers have access to valuable tools and guidelines to aid in this effort.
The Six-Step Guide for Seed Potato Growers
To help seed growers combat virus, the Scottish Aphid-borne Virus Working Group (SAbVWG) has developed the Six Steps for Effective Virus Management in Seed Potatoes. This step-by-step guide provides an integrated approach to keeping viruses out of seed stocks, emphasising the importance of every individual step in achieving success.
The guide is reviewed and updated annually by the SAbVWG to ensure it remains relevant and effective. By following these six steps, seed growers can produce high-quality seed potatoes that meet the requirements of the seed potato classification schemes.
Virus Management in Ware Crops
While the six-step guide is invaluable for seed growers, it doesn’t entirely eliminate the risk of virus infections in ware crops. Ware growers must take measures to control both seed-borne and aphid-borne viruses in their fields.
To address this, the National Virus Forum has developed the Four Steps to Effective IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Control of Virus in Ware and Processing Potatoes. This guide complements the six-step approach for seed growers, providing ware growers with actionable strategies to reduce virus risks in their crops. Like the six-step guide, it is reviewed and updated regularly by the National Virus Forum.
Why These Tools Matter
Both seed and ware growers should familiarize themselves with these guides to understand how to minimize virus-related risks in potato crops. By adopting these evidence-based practices, growers can protect the health and quality of their crops, ensuring sustainable production in the face of evolving challenges.
